Two major challenges – reaching Brittany and the Loire region in less time and providing an alternative to road transport
The LGV Brittany-Loire high-speed line is being built as an extension of the existing high-speed line between Paris and Connerré (to the east of Le Mans). It will be 182 km long and will serve the cities of Rennes, Laval, Le Mans and Nantes via Sablé-sur-Sarthe. This line will also include a “mixed” section of 25 km, to the north of Le Mans, between Connerré and La Milesse, which can be used for both passenger and freight traffic. In addition, for the first time in France, the “Virgule de Sablé” junction will make it possible to have direct links using high-speed TER trains (200 km/h) along the Nantes-Angers-Sablé-Laval-Rennes route.
This railway project has several aims. The main purpose is to improve railway service performance in Brittany and in the Loire region thanks to high-speed travel. Moreover, the new line will provide a real alternative to road transport.
- thanks to the new line, additional TER trains will be placed into circulation, thereby making regional and interregional mobility easier
- the new line will promote railway transport of freight.

- Time gains for the journey from Paris to Rennes and Brittany (-37 min), Paris to Laval (-22 min), Paris to Angers and Paris to Nantes (-8 min),
- Passenger trains travelling at the maximum speed of 320 km/h and 200 km/h for high-speed TER trains (Virgule de Sablé junction)
- Estimated cost of €3.4 billion
Protecting the environment – taking action to protect local heritage
The LGV Brittany-Loire high-speed line is a major act of sustainable development for the region. SNCF Réseau and ERE have adopted a three-fold approach:
- Avoiding the most sensitive zones, for example the Vicoin Valley (in the Mayenne department) which is home to a number of protected plant species.
- Adapting the project to reduce its inevitable impact. For example, by installing sound barriers and limiting the amount of CO2 emissions produced by the combustion of fossil fuels on the railway work site (i.e. the carbon footprint).
- Finding ways to compensate the residual environmental effects. For example, by creating substitution bodies of water or compensatory afforestation.
Consultation – a process open to everyone
As part of the LGV Brittany-Loire high-speed line project, SNCF Réseau participated in the departmental and regional monitoring committees which were presided by the Prefects. These committees included the relevant socio-economic players, elected officials, ministerial representatives, environmental protection associations, residents living near the train route as well as the two project owners (SNCF Réseau and Eiffage Rail Express). Regular meetings are held to monitor the project’s progress.
A public-private partnership contract was signed between SNCF Réseau (RFF at the time) and Eiffage Rail Express (ERE and part of the Eiffage Group) within the scope of the LGV Brittany-Loire high-speed line project. ERE is responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the line for 25 years. On 13 July 2011 SNCF Réseau also concluded a financing memorandum with the State, European Union and relevant local government authorities (regions, departments and metropolitan areas).
